Fantastic! We will generally only place a child in a home where he or she will have their own bedroom. If they’re part of a young sibling group, they may be able to share with their own brothers or sisters.

We will generally only place a child in a home where he or she will have their own bedroom. It is important for a child in care to know that they have their own space that they can call their own. We understand that living conditions may not always allow this. If you think you may have room in future we would be happy to chat with you.

We understand that people's living circumstances may be subject to change, such as moving house during the application process to foster. If you think you may have space for a child in the near future, we’d love to hear from you when you've moved to discuss your situation and work towards your fostering journey.

Fantastic! We welcome carers from a variety of ages and all walks of life. If you have a desire to make a difference to the life of a child in need, are healthy + able and can dedicate yourself to providing consistent care, then you'd make the perfect carer.

That’s OK. Age is not a barrier although we do prefer people to be 25 or over.

You can foster if you are single. However any new partner relationships require Key Assets to be notified. Anyone of good character who has space in their home and space in their heart can foster, providing they meet the required standards.

Great, couples in heterosexual or same sex relationships, with or without children can make great foster carers.

That's OK. With our preference for the relationship minimum being 2 years or more, this can be flexible. The premise is that we need stability and consistency for foster children, so a relatively new relationship that may end may cause a new stress and broken attachment for a foster child. This is something we'd be happy to discuss with you

Fantastic!

Great, at least one adult needs to be either a permanent resident or citizen of Australia.

You will need to discuss your residency status with us, as at least one adult who will be a carer needs to be a permanent resident or Australian citizen in order to be able to foster.

Fantastic, you would need to consider the additional responsibilities and the need to travel to appointments that the child may require, for example medical appointments, education, contact and meetings that take place.

You are not required to have a car or driver's licence to be approved as a foster carer, but you would need to consider the additional responsibilities and the need to travel to appointments that the child may require, for example medical appointments, education, contact and meetings that take place.

We would generally advise waiting until biological children are 2+ years of age before welcoming a foster child into the family. This is taking into consideration the amount of time and dedication required to take on a new placement and also due to the adjustment of family dynamics when the biological child is still so young. We are more than happy to discuss this with you, as we understand that not all situations are the same.

That's fantastic, tell us more

Key Assets is a Child Safe Organisation.  We need you to know that all our foster care applicants are required to undergo criminal clearances, department checks and working with children checks.  Please indicate that you understand this requirement.
